Adventure Programs

Teens will explore natural areas in Texas and participate in outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking, camping, etc. They will also participate in conservation projects such as beach clean-ups and habitat restoration.

Open to all accepted Zoo Crew members throughout the year. Open to all teens, ages 13-17, in non-summer months (January-May, September-December). This includes teens not accepted into Zoo Crew program.

Fall 2023 Adventure Programs

Armand Bayou is teeming with wildlife. Twilight is one of the most active times of day on the bayou. Join us for a sunset pontoon boat cruise as well look for animals like bald eagles, alligators, herons, egrets, and more. We spend some time exploring the nature trails and birding around Armand Bayou Nature Center before we set off on our sunset cruise.

We will meet at Gate 8 which is approximately 200 yards to the left of the main entrance of the Houston Zoo at 1pm and return by 8pm. Transportation will be provided by the Houston Zoo. Be sure to wear clothes that you are comfortable walking around and being outdoors in. We also recommend bringing insect repellent, a reusable water bottle and snacks.

Registration fee is $50 per teen.

Do you want to know what it’s like for a bird spending it’s time high up in the trees? Well now’s your chance! Join us for an aerial adventure course with Texas TreeVentures. Texas TreeVentures is a challenge by choice aerial adventure course in The Woodlands. The course is a series of physical challenges and adventure based elements. After going through Gear Up and Ground School with the instructors, we will spend several hours traversing the course. When we are finished we will have lunch at the near by park and then make our way back to the Zoo.

We will meet at the Houston Zoo at 8:30am and return by 3pm. Transportation will be provided by the Houston Zoo. Be sure to wear clothing that fits you well and does not allow anything to hang loose or get tangled in cables. Closed-toe, closed-heel shoes are required. Sneakers or hiking boots are recommended. Long hair must be pulled back and secured. Also be sure to bring a lunch and reusable water bottle with you.

Registration fee is $50 per teen.

Join Big Thicket for the annual planting days on Saturday, December 9th. We will be planting native grasses and pollinator plants in Big Sandy Unit of the Preserve to provide habitat to native birds like the rare Henslow’s sparrow and Bachman’s sparrow. After the planting event we will spend some time exploring the trails of the preserve looking for carnivorous plants like sundews and pitcher plants.

We will meet at Gate 8 which is approximately 200 yards to the left of the main entrance of the Houston Zoo at 7:00am and will return to the Zoo by 5pm. Transportation will be provided by the Houston Zoo. Be sure to wear clothes you are ok spending the day outdoors potentially getting dirty as well as closed-toe shoes. Also be sure to bring a reusable water bottle, a sack lunch, and snacks.
